Cartoceto, le Marche Italy
Cartoceto is located on top of a hill where there used to be an old “castle”, it is characterize by beautiful steps, and small alley ways that surround houses built on different levels. Of course this is all “packaged” by the strong town walls before opening up onto an enchanting plaza.
The town was already populated in the roman era, as the 49 B.C. epigraph by the old church testifies, however it only gained hystorical importance during the medieval times. It was then that a fortress was built around the “castle”, raised in 1351 and used until 1572, when it was destroyed by an earthquake.
Close to the entrance of the “castle” you will see the town hall characterized by a magical bell tower. Towards the east side close to the walls there is the Triumph theatre with a typical room created in the '800's with three different sets of terraces.
Cartoceto is also well known for the D.O.P. production of Extra vergin Olive Oil.
In the town and surrounding area you will find four operating oil mills known internationally for their quality products. Another specialty of the area is the “Fossa Cheese”.
